Garden & fencing frequently asked questions

Lange's Fencing and Landscaping Centre is crafting unique fences for people all over the Fraser Coast day after day. We're experienced in what we do and thought we would share some of what we have learned. We hope you find some of this information helpful when deciding on your next garden renovation plan.

If you have a question we haven't answered here, give us a call and we can advise you personally.

Q: Do I need to involve my neighbour if I'm redoing or changing the fence between us?
A: Yes, in Queensland a dividing fence is owned by both you and your neighbour. If you want to make any changes to your fence you need to propose them in writing to your neighbour. Give them time to seek alternative quotes or suggest changes to the plan—after all, they will usually be paying for half. If, however, the fence you want is more expensive than a ‘standard' fence, you pay the extra.

Q: How tall can my fence be?
A. What is considered a standard fence can vary from street to street but is usually 900 high – 1800 high. If you’re building a fence over 2 metres tall in your yard, you may need a permit from your local council. Pool fences must be a minimum of 1.2 metres tall, with gate latches no less than 1.5 metres off the ground.

Q: There hasn't been a dividing fence between me and my neighbour before—what's the standard?
A: The Queensland Government defines a ‘sufficient' boundary fence as the neighbourhood standard or something you and your neighbour agree on. If most of the houses in your street have a simple 0.5m tall chain link fence, this may be the standard. Bear this in mind when planning your new fence.

Q: How much mulch will I need?
A: This depends on the type of mulch you are using and the area that needs to be covered. A light mulch can be applied in a layer as thick as 10cm, but thicker and chunkier mulches may only need to be applied in a layer of 2–3cm or so.

Q: When should I apply mulch?
A: Applying mulch just after the wet season, when the soil is still wet, can help preserve some of that moisture. Alternatively, you can mulch in mid Spring to prepare the soil for new growth in Summer. Keep in mind that lighter mulches may need to be replaced after a year, while chunkier mulches can last for 2–3 years. The thicker the mulch, the longer it takes to break down.
